Catseye’s Holiday Giving

Dontated Blessing Bags Handed Out This Holiday Season

One of our co-workers challenged us to open our hearts to those who are often overlooked during the holiday season. Those who aren’t affiliated with a large charitable organization. Those who don’t feel like they have much to celebrate… She saw a need in our community and brought it to our attention. So, in the spirit of Holiday Giving (and with guidance provided by NL) this year we have decided to make Blessing Bags for the people affected by homelessness in our area. We want them to know that they are thought of and cared for, even if they might not always have reason to believe that’s true. What is a Blessing Bag, you may be wondering? Let us show you.

A person with long hair wearing a polka-dot shirt packs snacks into a black bag on a table. The table also has neatly organized socks, hats, and more snacks. The office setting has bookshelves and a chair in the background.    Two women are preparing care packages at a table. Various items such as bottled water, hygiene products, and snacks are spread out on the table. The women are focused on packing, with one holding a black bag and the other reaching into another bag.

Blessing Bags usually contain items of personal hygiene and necessity; such as food, a toothbrush, soap, water to drink. They may also include items of luxury if you so choose to provide them; such as wool socks, gloves, hats, gift cards. Typically, Blessing Bags are hand-delivered to a person in need. However, many shelters and rescue missions will accept these bags and pass them out as they see fit. Here are some of the items we are including in our Blessing Bags.

Top-down view of various items arranged on a patterned floor. Items include snacks, hygiene products, a beanie, gloves, socks, a water bottle, a book, and a Christmas card.    A table is covered with a variety of items including bottled water, cookies, assorted snacks, and neatly folded socks and gloves. In the background, there are two festive Christmas tree decorations and chairs.

We chose to pack our gifted items in a reusable vinyl drawstring bag. If you feel inspired to make Blessing Bags, any zip-lock style bag will work as well!

Black gift bags with festive name tags, one reading "Noel," are placed under a decorated Christmas tree with red and silver ornaments. A silver bauble reflects part of the scene. The tags are adorned with Christmas-themed designs.   A person with red-painted nails and wearing bracelets is sealing a clear plastic bag containing what appears to be toiletries. In the background, books and other small items are visible on a wooden surface.

We are of the mindset, “If you have it and are able to give, you should.”  If this mantra holds true to your beliefs, we challenge you. You don’t have to make a Blessing Bag. You don’t even have to donate money or very much time. Just do something nice for someone else this Holiday Season. You never know how one simple act could change a person’s life.

Happy Holidays to you and yours, from all of us here at Catseye.
