Celebrate World Pest Day 2019

Global Event was Established to Raise Pest Awareness

It feels likes a few times a month we are celebrating a new holiday — like National Running Day and National Children’s Day, for example (and both of which are during the month of June, by the way).

Another day in the month of June that is special to Catseye Pest Control and the pest control industry as a whole is World Pest Day, observed on June 6 each year.

The pest-focused homemade “holiday” aims to raise awareness around the pest control industry for its role in keeping the planet and its inhabitants safe in the comfort of their own homes and businesses.

Raising Awareness for the Professional Pest Control & Management Industry

Founded by the National Pest Management Association in 2017, the annual observance of World Pest Day raises awareness about the vital role pest control and management professionals play each day.

Pest control professionals do more than take care of pest infestations in homes and businesses.

Pest management professionals protect our health, food, property, and the environment from the threat of pests.

“It’s great to have a day like World Pest Day where we can celebrate how important pest control really is. Pest control is much more important than eliminating gross bugs or rodents that we don’t want around; it’s about protecting people from health hazards, preserving our crops from damage, and keeping the structures that we live and work in safe from damage,” expressed Joe Dingwall, President of Catseye Pest Control.

While pests might seem like an issue that only business owners and homeowners have to deal with, they pose significant threats and risks for us and our animals.

Mosquitoes and ticks, for example, can transmit serious and sometimes fatal diseases like West Nile Virus and Lyme disease.

These lawn pests can ruin an otherwise enjoyable time outside if the area is left untreated, which is why Catseye offers an organic tick and mosquito control program.

Other miniscule intruders include termites and carpenter ants — both of which can cause severe structural damage if the infestation is not immediately handled by a professional.

General Pest Prevention & Awareness Tips

In addition to working with a professional pest management company, there as steps business owners and homeowners can take in preventing pest infestations that can protect their investment.

To help minimize the threat of pest infestations, property owners are encouraged to keep the following tips in mind.

  • Eliminate stagnant or standing water sources. Mosquitoes use these areas as a place to lay their eggs. Buckets, rain gutters, and other areas of the landscape that accumulate pools of standing water are all considered to be prime areas for these pests.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery trimmed away from the home or office. Branches that overhang the roofline and overgrown shrubbery can act as an easy way for pests and critters to access the home or business.
  • Repair any cracks, gaps, or openings on the exterior of the building. The areas needing repair may seem inconspicuous, but they can act as a point of entry for pests such as ants, cockroaches, spiders and so many others. Pest exclusion is the ideal way to keep unwanted pests and insects out of your home or business.
  • Repair or replace damaged or rotted shingles and fascia. Problem areas such as these can also act as a point of entry for pests, even wildlife critters like bats and squirrels.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawlspaces dry and install proper ventilation.
  • Avoid leaving food out in accessible areas for extended periods of time. Food that we consume and the food our animals consume should be stored in air-tight containers.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it on a regular basis.
