It’s Time For a Pest-Free Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend has arrived and it’s time to kick off the summer with outdoor barbecues, games of Frisbee and first dips of the season in the pool.

Unfortunately, as family and friends stop over to share in the festivities, so will unwanted pests! The team at Catseye Pest Control wanted to share a few quick tips to keep pests from bugging you this holiday weekend. Before your friends arrive for any outdoor fun, make sure to:

1. Keep the lawn manicured and dispose of all leaf debris.

Your lawn, leaf and mowing debris is a breeding ground for ticks. Be sure to remove all landscaping rubbish from your yard prior to any party – but remember to protect yourself from tick bites by wearing long sleeves and pants when doing such yard work.

2.  Apply insect repellent.

With more than 20,000 reports of Lyme disease and 100 cases of encephalitis diagnosed each year, insects aren’t only pesky, they’re potentially harmful to your health! Make sure to apply insect repellant with DEET to yourself and your family members throughout the day (and especially after each trip to the pool). DEET is the active ingredient that will help fend of those biting bugs.

3. After the party, make sure to shower and check for ticks.

After a long, hot day outdoors, you’re going to be pretty tired. Before retiring to bed, make sure to check yourself for insect bites and ticks. Though most insect bites will go away quickly and are no cause for concern, they should still be monitored for irritation in the days following your time outdoors. If a tick is found on you, your child or a pet, be careful when removing them. If you do not know how to remove a tick correctly, be sure to call your doctor or veterinarian.

We hope these tips help you have a fun, safe, bug-free weekend!

Happy Memorial Day!
