Nobody likes moving in wet winter weather, and as we enter the warmest time of the year, a lot of people are getting busy searching for new apartments.

One of the most critical things to look for when checking out potential apartments is any sign of bug infestation. Here are a few tips on finding a bug-free apartment.

Make sure the apartment is clean. This may sound obvious, but apartments not cleaned regularly by previous tenants are subject to infestation by bugs attracted to areas with dirt, dust and moisture build-up. Check not only the main rooms but bathrooms and closets, as well, for grime and signs of previous water damage.

Make sure all windows seal tightly and screens are installed or available. Windows and doors with screens prevent easy access to your apartment by bugs. If not already present, examine all windows to ensure screens can be added.

Check to see that cracks have been sealed off. Noticeable cracks and holes in the walls and floors of the apartment are open doorways to unwanted pests.

In furnished apartments, inspect all pieces for bugs. Mattresses, couches and rugs are all easy living spaces for pests such as bed bugs and fleas. They can quickly turn any exciting moving experience to an irritating and painful one.

Speak to the landlord about yard responsibilities and trash policies. An unkempt yard with fallen leaves and lawn debris creates a great home for insects and rodents. A clear understanding of what the landlord will and won’t take care of should be established prior to signing any agreement.
