Rodent Issues to Check for After a Storm

As a few days have passed since Hurricane Sandy traveled through much of the Northeast, many properties have been left with damage due to both heavy winds and flooding. Everyone at Catseye Pest Control hopes, first and foremost, that all of our customers, their family, friends and neighbors remained safe and dry throughout the storm.

As the weekend approaches and the time comes to investigate any signs of property damage, we wanted to take a moment to point out rodent issues that may have set in during the hurricane season. When assessing structural damage, look for any new openings to your home that may have appeared due to heavy water or wind. Check for gaps where your foundation meets your siding and for any indication your gutters and leaders are pulling away from the house. Holes in chimneys, spaces underneath garage doors and openings in roof tiles are prime examples. As we’ve mentioned before, it only takes a hole the size of a dime for a mouse and a hole the size of a quarter for a rat to gain access to your home, where rodents will be warmer and safer from storm damage.

The weather conditions this week may have already caused an influx of rodents indoors seeking drier and safer habitats. Take time this weekend to scan your basement and attic areas for any new signs of rodent infestations or potential new entry points.
